Sharing is Caring

Ok, so in March 2009 we had the drive, the passion, and the need in the marketplace. There had to be other “non-steezy” snowboarders out there, right? We hoped so.

We did the normal business stuff – filed paperwork for a business name and license, paid trademarking fees, ordered business cards, setup facebook/twitter, etc. All in all, we were amped but how were we (two former racers and snowboard instructors turned corporate cubicle soldiers) going to make a snowboarding outerwear line?!

We talked about the idea to anyone and everyone who would listen. We got lots of good, honest feedback (including “you guys are crazy”) and, importantly, some extremely valuable connections in the industry. We told them about our vision and they added to it.

By sharing our idea we formed an awesome network and realized that the opportunity for the company isn’t in just the design but the end-to-end business (supply chain, distribution channels, everything). That’s when I realized that we’re building something different and new.

Funk

We are possibly the least funky people we know…

Don’t get me wrong, we love to have fun and dork around but we are really not funky. We (the founders) met while working at a ski resort and bonded over not fitting into the typical “snowboarder” culture. We can use the lingo but honestly it just sounds forced and awkward coming from us.

We had the same experience when shopping for snowboarding clothes.

We wanted something that we could wear in the winter and down into the city (okay, maybe with a stop at the outlets) without looking like crazy, baggy, neon teenagers. The style is cool, just not for us. I (a female) wanted outerwear that was figure flattering (and not pink or have flowers) and Tim (co-founder, male) wanted pants that fit like old school relaxed fit jeans.

Most of all, we wanted to wear our snowboarding jackets downtown to represent our snow-loving lifestyle on a cold day and take that same jacket up to the mountains on the weekend.

Best Place on Earth

If I had to select a place in the world I’d want to go and here’s my response -Baldface in Nelson, British Columbia. It’s also the birthplace of our company.

On an amazing backcountry trip we met incredible people, including the founders of major action sports accessories companies. When we were riding in Canada we realized that there is such a thing as “overanalyzing” (shock to us nerds) and, most importantly, we experienced the joy and freedom of letting go (both on the snow and in life). After taking risks on the snow and then having dinner with people who took risks in their career, starting Pop Outerwear was a no brainer.

Having a startup is like jumping off those cliffs or riding those steeps – you’re freaked out but having the time of your life, just hanging on and screaming with glee.

Say What

When we started Pop Outerwear we were overcome by the support and love from everyone (and even strangers). As we started getting product in, we invited people over to try on prototypes and provide feedback. We love getting our community involved in the process and also sharing more about our journey – starting a company in the outdoor industry.

We might be making every mistake in the book but we’re having a blast. We truly love what we do.

Thanks for reading and drop me a line if you have anything you want to ask us / want to know and we’ll post it.
