Holiday Cheer

The holidays always make for a good story in my family as I’m sure they do for most people, but my family never fails to screw up a good tradition. I don’t mean that in a negative way in the slightest. Some of my best stories come from holiday mishaps with the family. One of the most memorable Thanksgiving’s I’ve had was the year my Mother accidentally cooked the turkey upside down. Once cooked, the bird was no longer in need of carving after shedding the meat off the bones during the cooking process. As a result, my Mom is no longer allowed to cook the turkey.

Papa Lottridge and I have acquired several memorable moments over the years. We don’t even bother hanging Christmas lights on our house anymore because the last year we tried only half lit up and we received a complaint from the homeowner’s association informing us that our half-lit lights weren’t aesthetically pleasing enough for neighborhood standards and we should take them down. Due to a similar complaint we have stopped decorating for Halloween because the year we placed headstones in our grass they kept falling over and had a much too disheveled look even by Halloween standards.

This year has been a little more tame so far. My Dad came up to San Francisco to visit me for Thanksgiving. We decided to cook for the two of us, which turned out to be quite the adorable endeavor. After walking around Safeway trying to find the smallest turkey possible we decided to go with a chicken because there was no way we would be able to finish a 17 pound turkey between the two of us. We cooked dinner while drinking champagne and listening to the Temptations. Overall, a super successful Thanksgiving. I can’t wait to head back home to Jackson Hole for Christmas!

Summer Camp

San Francisco, Santa Clara, Sacramento. Three weekends of ski/snowboard festivals under our belts and we are pumped about the enthusiasm we’ve received from customers and people in the industry! After the first Saturday in Fort Mason I could barely talk, but I had a blast. That Saturday was the busiest day I’ve seen at the shows for sure. Tim, Joanne and I barely had a chance to eat, let alone sit down, all day.

Being at the shows, immersed in the ski/snowboarding culture, made me feel back at home in Jackson, Wyoming. San Francisco is an incredible place to be, but I definitely miss the ‘laid back’ feeling of living in a resort town. The energy surrounding the industry at the shows had me stoked to be a part of it again. We worked long days and had a blast out on the town after closing the show down for the night.

While winding down during the last hour of the Sacramento show a friend of mine from Boreal Mountain reminisced about the past three weekends, “It’s like summer camp. You go to all these shows, make new friends and then it ends. We won’t all be together again until next year.” We’ll always have the memories! Jagermeister girls walking around Fort Mason wearing nothing but lingerie (they must have been freezing!), the BMX ramp, Sierra at Tahoe mini skate ramp, rock wall and let’s not forget the Sierra at Tahoe mock ski slope. There were the cutest little kids learning how to ski! I met a lot of awesome people with the ‘work hard, play hard’ attitude who I hope to keep in contact with as the season continues. Can’t wait for my first trip out to the slopes!

Becoming Fashion Aware

Can I say we were fashion dummies? We always loved being creative and appreciated things like effortless style and everlasting quality, but I definitely wouldn’t categorize us into the fashionista group. Don’t get me wrong; I like retail therapy just as much as the next person but I wouldn’t clamor over the latest runway styles. I’ve always been a tomboy – preferring relaxed, sporty styles but also don’t want to totally abandon my femininity either. I want to grab a thin fleece to run to the neighborhood grocery store but not look like I just got back from either work or the gym.

Style trending for Pop has been lots and lots of fashion scoping – and I’ve developed an appreciation for the art of fashion. Window shoppers, you’ve met your match. When coming up with designs we started taking pictures of everything from apparel to nature to random people on the bus, and drew from that inspiration to create our Pop Outerwear line.

Cookie time

Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, yum

I am a baked-goods fanatic. However, while I enjoy baking 24 cookies, I do not need to eat 24 cookies. So, I brought my baker’s dozen to Pop Outerwear‘s office.

Here is a delicious recipe for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. If you stop by the showroom, you might be offered one…

The Most Amazing Chocolate Chip Cookies:

In large bowl, beat egg until fluffy. If you are an indulgent/spontaneous baker such as myself, bring butter to room temperature by using the “defrost” setting on the microwave.  Beat butter, egg & vanilla together, blend in sugars. Warm butter = unhappy cookies

After the wet ingredients are mixed, put the bowl in the freezer to chill**

1 C Butter
2 Eggs
1 C Sugar
1 C Brown Sugar
1 t vanilla

Mixing

Now, mix the dry ingredients together in separate bowl. I just recently got a food processor for my birthday (thanks Mom!). If you have one, blending the oatmeal makes a nice consistency. But for the past 4 years, I have successfully baked these cookies without. This also adds another step/dish to wash…

2 C Flour
2 1/2 C Oatmeal
1 t Baking Powder
1 t Baking Soda
1/2 t Salt

Ready for the oven

Slowly blend in dry ingredients. Fold in chocolate chips. Bake at 375 for 7-10 minutes. If you have a wretched oven, such as mine, rotate cookie tray and reduce temperature 25 degrees, if needed.

** again, an unnecessary step, but it helps give control of the cookie shape.

Ideas

The first week interning at Pop Outerwear was super exciting. We had all these ideas, we ordered delicious pizza and we were ready to change the world in one night! After the initial high of starting a new project in a great environment, I realized that although these ideas are great, maybe it is best to start small?

In order to succeed the goals need to be reachable within the size of the organization. Why is this concept so easy to forget?

The Interview

When I interviewed for Pop Outerwear, Joanne and Tim invited me over for a BBQ. From the get-go, I knew the interview process alone would be a unique experience.  Over a delicious sausage and salad we discussed my goals and thoughts about working with pop.

As an intern, I am rebounding from teaching/directing a small preschool for a year. Once I realized that child psychology wasn’t my career directionality of choice, I started looking into different career paths. I became interested in the startup industry because of the shared values startups so often share with academia.

In our hour long conversation through lunch, I learned about how Pop Outerwear started and what makes Pop different from other outerwear companies (more to come on future posts). I left excited for the opportunity to work with Pop and a week later, I arrived excited to work with this awesome company.

Adaptability

Working at a startup like Pop Outerwear is like walking into a multiple intelligence test, where the game is to navigate as many strengths as possible. In my experience thus far, I realized how dynamic entrepreneurs need to be in order to succeed.

For example a single day requires a person to speak a Chinese, edit video software, work on pattern designs for the next coat, pick out buttons and stay up-to-date with all of the social media accounts; not to mention keeping tabs on the administrative finances and the website design. Essentially, entrepreneurs must be logical, mathematical, interpersonal, spatial, intrapersonal and kinesthetic.  Of course, depending on the topic of the startup, other facets of Howard Garner’s multiple intelligences may too be required.

Around the Dinner Table

Every time the topic of snowboarding arises, I awkwardly avoid the subject. I’ve always felt a separation between people who go to the mountain to ski and people who go to the mountain to drink hot chocolate and sit in hot tubs. Since I started my internship at Pop Outerwear, I realized that I can both learn to snowboard and sit in the hot tub. The most important thing is trying something new, having fun and enjoying the ride.

One Friday evening, I had an interesting conversation with five friends. The topic of nostalgia for snowy winters came up when discussing the Berkeley/San Francisco weather. We brainstormed the idea of hitting the slopes and spending a long weekend in Tahoe.  After five minutes of snowboarding conversation, I was the first person to admit I had never set foot on a snowboard.  I was met by three relieved responses followed by comments of bunny hills.

I look forward to learning this new skill, but most of all I am excited to go and experience Tahoe’s winter together.

My Introduction to the Slopes

Around age seven, my family set out to conquer the mountain. With eager anticipation, I struggled to pull on my neon striped snowsuit (pictured below), knit hat and ski boots. Twenty minutes later, my family wobbled back to the ski basin and ordered three hot chocolates to help nurse our sprained ankles; provided by the snow-globe of Mt. Bachelor. As my best friend and her family whooshed down the slopes, I realized that this winter day was both the beginning and the end to my career as a professional skier. My family took a vow of skiing silence and never again returned to the hill without a giant inter-tube and an anxious amount of tire chains. For the remainder of my childhood, my experience in the snow primarily revolved around making “snow cones” in my back yard and recreating near Ethan Frome experiences sledding down neighborhood hills.

Rocking the neon snow gear

Until recently, I wrote off the prospect becoming a snowboarder. Although friends who share the pasion for the winter weather suggested that I learn, I simply dismissed the invitation as a common courtesy. I noticed that people often bond over how they can snowboard and those can’t silently look at their feet. Ultimately, I didn’t want to be the only adult on the bunny hill and because so few people spoke up to admit their lack of snowboarding knowledge, I never learned.  I am really excited to intern at Pop Outerwear for many reasons, one being that Pop’s entire goal encourages people to get out and enjoy the mountain.  I look forward to trying out this new sport, but in the meantime, I will learn about the industry of outerwear as I wait for winter to approach.
